The intrados is decorated with a beautiful Arabic and Turkish inscription in thuluth script.
God chose a lord of our time to do good deeds and undo the chains of the needy: the most honourable Yussef Dey, who sees his own profit in spending public finances. He made water spring forth from all sides while expecting as a reward to quench his thirst from the river El-Kawthari; the public fountain is his, look at its beauty! Thanks to him, Bizerte has become pleasing to the beholder.
Drink, O thirsty one, from this delicious fountain whose clear water is so sweet! Such a beautiful fountain whose date is: the chief of the soldiers created the fountain for us.
- Restoration :
The fountain was restored during the 1990s, and some windows opening onto the façade were filled in.
This fine-looking public fountain is an architectural gem in the public square overlooking the old port and several streets and alleyways of the medina of Bizerte. The fountain is remarkable for its very attractive arch of alternating black and white marble arch-stones, topped with a raised edge of green curved tiles. The arch, slightly overhanging, is inscribed in a rectangle in relief framed by two marble columns with foliate capitals, and offers myriad views.
In the past, the fountain was supplied with water by a noria driven by an animal, giving the square an atmosphere of cheerfulness and coolness, caused by the murmur of the water flowing into the series of earthenware jars.
These public fountains were widespread in the Muslim world. They were the work of benefactors and were managed by the administrators of habous and waqfs.
