L’inscription se trouvait encastrée sous le mihrâb de la cour centrale de la zawiyya de Sidi Abid (XIVe siècle) ; il en fut retiré lors des derniers travaux de restauration du monument. Il est fort probable qu’elle provienne du site de Sabra, capitale des Fatimides puis des Zirides aux Xe-XIe siècles. Il est possible qu’à l’origine elle figurât sur une porte d’un édifice monumental de la cité d’al-Mansûr (r. 946-953).
L'écriture est très soignée et d'une grande richesse paléographique. Constituée de deux fragments, l’inscription incomplète est sculptée en relief en très grands caractères kufiques fleuris aux hampes biseautées. De petits motifs feuillus s’en échappent parfois ; ils viennent, ainsi que d’autres, plus élaborés, meubler les intervalles. Parmi eux se distingue en particulier le motif cordiforme qui termine le mot « salam », symbolisant l'amour et la paix.
La frise présente de grandes analogies stylistiques et décoratives avec les inscriptions datables de la fin du Xe et du début du XIe siècle. En effet, des frises épigraphiques en kufique fleuri, très semblables, sont attestées à la même époque en Ifriqiya à l'exemple du bandeau en bois sculpté ornant la maqsura de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan[1].
L’écriture kufique ifriqiyenne des Xe-XIe siècles était plus élaborée dans ses formes et son graphisme que celle qui régnait en Andalousie. Mais elle présente une parenté frappante avec des spécimens similaires d’Égypte fatimide, comme les inscriptions architecturales se trouvant in-situ dans les mosquées d’al-Azhar, d’al-Hakîm et d’al-Aqmar au Caire, ou celles conservées dans les musées[2]. Il est possible qu’une même école paléographique rayonnât alors en Ifriqiya et en Égypte fatimide. Sans atteindre le raffinement du kufique fleuri oriental, elle présente néanmoins beaucoup de traits communs avec le kufique fleuri qui se développa en Irak, Iran[3] ou même Afghanistan[4].
L’écriture kufique constituait au Moyen-Âge un des principaux éléments de l’unité artistique et culturelle du monde islamique.

Deux inscriptions semblables ornaient pour l’une la « galerie-narthex » de la Grande Mosquée de Sousse et pour l'autre l’encadrement du mihrâb de la cour de la Grande Mosquée de Sfax.
