Cet encrier rectangulaire est creusé dans sa partie supérieure d’une cavité centrale tronconique destinée à recevoir l’encre. Des deux côtés, un espace a été ménagé pour la mise en place des qalam. Les quatre facettes sont tapissées d’un décor géométrique identique sculpté assez profondément : un losange inscrit dans un carré divisé en six segments par l’entrecroisement de trois figures. Les écoinçons ont été meublés par un triangle incisé. De part et d’autres, une multitude de triangles rappellent un motif de nid d’abeille.
Cet encrier est le seul exemplaire tunisien d’époque médiévale qui nous soit parvenu, ce qui rend difficile toute tentative de restitution de l’évolution de ce type d’objet. Des encriers d'origine mésopotamienne, datant de la même époque, sont actuellement conservés dans la collection du musée du château de Péralada (Gérone) et au musée du Louvre[1]. D'autres ont été découverts en contexte de fouille à Samarcande (Ouzbékistan) : de forme cylindrique, ils présentent toutefois des ressemblances au niveau du décor. La parenté des motifs est encore plus grande avec un plumier rectangulaire provenant des mêmes fouilles (Samarcande, musée du Régistân, inv. MIOS 9-56) : il est orné de décors géométriques champlevés, identiques par certains aspects à ceux de l'encrier de Raqqada. Des encriers à décor similaire ont été retrouvés en Espagne, à l'instar de l'encrier à décor ajouré et glacé, profondément taillé dans la pâte encore fraîche. Cet encrier, qui fut découvert à Cordoue puis déposé au musée archéologique de la ville (inv. 12739), est datable des Xe-XIe siècles. Un autre exemplaire de forme cylindrique réalisé en céramique glacée est actuellement conservé au musée archéologique national de Madrid (Xe siècle, inv. 62.997).
L'usage des décors de stuc ajouré est largement attesté en Orient islamique, et illustré dans les décors du troisième style de Samarra. Ceux-ci deviennent fréquents dans les revêtements muraux de l'Espagne omeyyade caractérisés par une nette prédilection pour le décor floral. Aux époques almohades, mérinides, zayanides et hafsides au Maghreb ce sont les formes géométriques compliquées qui dominent dans les panneaux de stuc. L’étude de l'encrier de Raqqada atteste de la place prépondérante de l’Ifriqiya dans la transmission des courants artistiques entre Orient et Occident musulman.
