This lamp with a nearly-spherical reservoir placed on a small pedestal has wide frontal spouts with angular tips, a cruciform filter and a ring-shaped handle surmounted by an ornamental thumb piece that suggests a palmette or bird’s tail.
Oil lamps made either of bronze – only for the well-to-do – or ceramic were already well known in Greco-Roman antiquity, and their shape changed very little. There are Roman lamps on bases whose thumb pieces are shaped like plumage or leaves. Terracotta and bronze Byzantine lamps also have this type of form featuring two spouts and a handle resembling plumage. Elegant eighth-century Oriental ewers made of bronze have similar thumb pieces.
Islamic oil lamps fall within the continuity of ancient and Byzantine lamps; they merely display a few stylistic transformations. On a great number of lamps from al-Andalus a bird surmounts the handle or the lid of the reservoir. Several bronze oil lamps from Madinat Elvira (Spain) bear similarities with the lamp from the Qal‘a, essentially in the decoration of the handle and in the shape, although they differ in the decoration of the reservoirs. In the museum of Sevilla is a tenth-century bronze Umayyad lamp with a dove on the handle whose body (plumage) closely resembles the one from the Qal‘a [1]. Other bronze lamps displaying richly wrought animal decorations and necks fitted with lids, dating from the tenth and eleventh centuries, were discovered in a village near the town of Liétor in Spain [2]. There are also bronze lamps of this type with one, two or three spouts and a neck, sometimes with small figures of volatiles, in Kairouan [3].
The decoration of the thumb piece of the lamp from the Qal‘a has sometimes been identified as a bird’s tail, given that birds frequently feature on lighting devices (e.g., candlesticks with ducks, oil lamps). In a Christian context the bird takes the form of a dove associated with the Holy Spirit [4].A certain number of small birds were discovered on the site of the Qal‘a: they are presumed to come from the tops of lamps or incense burners.
