Cette lampe à réservoir presque sphérique posé sur piédouche est munie de deux larges becs frontaux aux extrémités anguleuses, d’un filtre cruciforme et d’une anse annulaire surmontée d’un poucier ornemental qui évoque la palmette ou une queue d’oiseau.
Les lampes à huile en bronze (réservé à des personnes aisées) ou en céramique étaient déjà connues dans l’Antiquité gréco-romaine, leur forme évolua peu. Il existe des lampes romaines sur pied dont le poucier prend la forme d’un plumage ou de feuilles. Les lampes byzantines en terre cuite ou en bronze présentent également ce type de formes à deux becs et à anse évoquant un plumage. D’élégantes aiguières orientales en bronze du VIIIe siècle sont ornées d’un poucier similaire.
Les lampes à huile islamiques se placent dans la continuité des lampes antiques et byzantines : elles ne présentent que quelques transformations stylistiques. Sur un grand nombre de lampes d’al-Andalus, un oiseau surmonte l’anse ou le couvercle du réservoir. Quelques lampes à huile en bronze de Madinat Elvira (Espagne) présente des similitudes avec celle de la Qal‘a, essentiellement dans le décor de l’anse et dans la forme, mais le décor des réservoirs diffère. Au musée de Séville, une lampe omeyyade en bronze du Xe siècle est ornée au niveau de l’anse d’une colombe dont le corps (plumage) est très proche de celui de la Qal‘a [1]. D’autres lampes en bronze avec un décor animalier richement élaboré et munies d’un goulot à couvercle, datées du Xe et XIe siècle, ont été découvertes dans un village du Liétor en Espagne [2]. Des lampes de ce type à un et trois becs en bronze, munies d’un goulot et parfois de petites représentations de volatiles sont également présentes à Kairouan [3].
Le décor du poucier de la lampe de la Qal‘a fut parfois identifié à une queue d’oiseau en raison de la présence fréquente de ces animaux sur les luminaires (chandeliers aux canards, lampes à huile…). En contexte chrétien, l’oiseau prend la forme d’une colombe associée au Saint Esprit [4].Un certain nombre d’oiseaux de petites dimensions ont été découverts sur le site de la Qal‘a : on suppose qu’ils devaient surmonter des luminaires ou des brûle-parfum.
