The collection of manuscripts that belonged to the Great Mosque of Kairouan was transferred to the National Library of Tunis in 1967 and kept there for sixteen years until it was given to the Islamic Museum in Raqqada in 1983.
This leaf is taken from a Qur’an written on parchment and contains seven lines of Kufic script. The vowels are indicated by red diacritical dots. The tanwin is marked by two superimposed red dots and the hamza by a green dot. In addition to these diacritical marks related to the system developed by Abi-Al-Aswad (d. 681), several other marks based on the system of Alhajjaj and al Khalil ibn Ahmed[1] are used.
The scansion between verses is marked by a motif made up of six small contiguous gold circles in the form of a pyramid. The title of the Suras consists of two lines of ornate gold Kufic script outlined in brown, containing the title of the Sura, the number of verses it contains and its order in the revelation. The marginal motif takes the form of a roundel filled with flowery gold foliated scrolls edged with alternating green and gold dots. The indication of the diacritical marks is a mixture of the Iraqi method, characterised by the exclusive use of red dots, and the Andalusian method, which utilises several colours. This specific feature confirms Ifriqiya’s role as a place of convergence and interaction between the Muslim East and West in the Middle Ages.
The very rounded Kufic script heralds maghribi writing. It is one of the oldest expressions of this evolution, which allows us to trace the birth of maghribi writing in Ifriqiya before it developed in Andalusia, generating maghribi writing as we know it today.
Other manuscripts from Spain and the old library of the Great Mosque of Kairouan dating from the same period bear a striking resemblance to the writing in this Qur’an. This relation argues in favour of a common substratum and interaction between Ifriqiyya and Andalusia. The different stages of the development of this writing are not yet well known. The lack of knowledge complicates our quest to find out how this writing originated and whether it came into being in Kairouan or Cordoba.
