La collection de manuscrits qui appartenait à la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan fut transférée en 1967 à la Bibliothèque Nationale de Tunis où elle fut conservée pendant seize ans, avant d'être déposée en 1983 au Musée Islamique de Raqqada.
Ce feuillet est tiré d’un coran rédigé sur parchemin en écriture kufique maghrébine sur sept lignes. Les voyelles sont indiquées par des points diacritiques rouges. Le tanwin est marqué par deux points rouges superposés alors que la hamza est indiquée par un point vert. Outre ces marques diacritiques relatives au système développé par Abi-Al-Aswad (mort en 681), quelques autres, conformes au système d’Alhajjaj et d’al Khalil ibn Ahmed[1], sont aussi utilisées.
La scansion entre les versets est marquée par un motif composé de six petits cercles dorés contigus en forme de pyramide. Le titre des sourates consiste en deux lignes d’écriture kufique ornée et dorée cernée de marron, contenant le titre de la sourate, le nombre des versets et son ordre dans la révélation. Le motif marginal prend la forme d’un rondeau meublé de rinceaux fleuris et dorés aux pourtours parsemés de points verts alternant avec des points dorés. L'indication des marques diacritiques constitue un amalgame entre la méthode irakienne, caractérisée par l'utilisation exclusive des points de couleur rouge, et la méthode andalouse où plusieurs couleurs sont utilisées. Cette spécificité confirme le rôle de lieu de rencontre et d'interférence que jouait l'Ifrîqiya au Moyen Âge, entre Orient et Occident musulman.
L’écriture kufique est très arrondie et annonce l’écriture maghrébine. Il s’agit d’une des plus anciennes manifestations de cette évolution, qui permet de suivre la genèse de l’écriture maghrébine en Ifrîqiya, avant son développement en Andalousie qui va générer l’écriture maghrébine que nous connaissons actuellement.
D'autres manuscrits provenant d'Espagne et de l'ancienne bibliothèque de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan, datés de la même époque, offrent une parenté d’écriture frappante avec ce coran. Ces similitudes plaident en faveur d’un substrat commun et d’une interférence entre l’Ifrîqiyya et l’Andalousie. Les différentes étapes de l’évolution de cette écriture ne sont pas encore bien connues. Cette méconnaissance complique notre quête sur l’origine de cette graphie et sur le foyer exact de sa naissance, à Kairouan ou à Cordoue.
