Les Hafsides (Tunisie, Algérie orientale, 1228 – 1574) ont perpétué le style de frappe des Almohades, qui avaient introduit la forme carrée sur les monnaies ifrîqiyennes. Quoique de forme générale circulaire, les dinars hafsides présentent un formulaire réparti à l’intérieur et à l’extérieur du carré central.
Les dimensions et les poids des dinars hafsides dépassent ceux fixés par la législation islamique ainsi que ceux des pièces de leurs prédécesseurs. Ceci reflète l'approvisionnement soutenu du Maghreb en or provenant des centres aurifères du sud du Sahara, sans pour autant témoigner de la grande prospérité économique du Maghreb à cette époque.
La somptuosité et la qualité des monnaies almohades puis hafsides expliquent l'engouement des Européens pour les pièces de monnaie en or appelées masmouda et dobla et pour les dirham en argent désignés sous le terme de millares. Les commerçants pisans, génois, vénitiens, marseillais et barcelonais approvisionnaient les ports maghrébins de Ceuta, Alger, Bougie, Tunis en produits confectionnés sur la rive nord de la Méditerranée, en contrepartie de matières premières et de monnaies d’or et d’argent.
La graphie cursive, caractérisée par la netteté et la sobriété des caractères, est héritée de l'art almohade. Le champ épigraphique est garni par différents motifs décoratifs (annelets, pirouettes, fleurons, vrilles et palmettes lisses).
La devise «Al-Mahdi calife de Dieu. Louange à Dieu. Le pouvoir et la force à Dieu » reflète la continuité avec la doctrine almohade.
Cette monnaie est comparable à celles frappées en Espagne à l’époque almohade, surtout en ce qui concerne la forme. Les formulaires des monnaies almohades espagnoles sont rédigées en graphie cursive mais présentent également des analogies étonnantes avec la graphie des monnaies almohades frappées au Maroc[1]. Les monnaies du royaume de Beni Zayyan (1235-1554) à Tlemcen ne diffèrent guère du prototype hafside, mais la graphie utilisée est maghrébine et réalisée en relief[2].
