This dinar was minted during the reign of the first Aghlabid dynasty. The kufic writing, framed by a beaded ring, is very sober. It is similar, palaeographically speaking, to the inscription found on the imposts of the capitals surmounting the columns of the niche in the mihrâb of the Great Mosque of Kairouan (862). These two scripts display a certain analogy with the script found on the commemorative inscription on the ribât of Sousse (821, in a rectangular cartouche inside the ribât, on the east façade of the gallery). However, the inscription of the Aghlabid coin being older, it appears more archaising and the bevelled extremities of the lettering are barely visible. The place where it was minted is not indicated on this coin, and this is the norm for all Aghlabid dinars.
The word ghalaba appearing in the central area on the reverse is typical of Aghlabid coinage; it seems to be the emblem of the dynasty, which thus marked its independence from the Abbasid Caliphate. This fact would be confirmed later with the incorporation of the name of the Aghlabid prince, and in a few cases of the name of his mawla (servant) in charge of the mint.
Aghlabid coinage was in circulation in Sicily (under Aghlabid domination as from the conquest of the island in 827), as attested by a few specimens discovered in digs and conserved at the museum of Caltagirone (Italy) and in central Maghreb[1].
Although it differs from the Abbasid dinar in terms of weight and size, Aghlabid coinage is very similar to it in terms of form and script. This relationship also holds true with the Tulunid dinars of Egypt.
Aghlabid coinage was very present in commercial trade in the Occidental Mediterranean region, surely due to the quality and purity of its minting. It has been observed that at the time of the Umayyad emirate of Cordova (758-912), the coins were not minted in Andalusia. The dinars that were in circulation came from other dynasties, and especially those of the Aghlabid, who probably monopolised part of the trans-Saharan gold trade.
