Ce dinar a été frappé sous le règne du premier dynaste aghlabide. L'écriture kufique, encadrée par un ruban perlé, est très sobre. Elle se rapproche du point de vue paléographique de l'inscription se trouvant sur les sommiers des chapiteaux surmontant les colonnes de la niche du mihrâb de la Grande Mosquée de Kairouan (862). Ces deux graphies présentent une certaine analogie avec celle se trouvant sur la dédicace commémorative du ribât de Sousse (821, dans un cartouche rectangulaire à l'intérieur du ribât, sur la façade est de la galerie). Cependant, l'inscription sur la monnaie aghlabide étant plus ancienne, elle parait plus archaïsante et laisse à peine apparaître les biseaux à l'extrémité des hampes des lettres. Le centre de frappe ne figure pas sur cette pièce, et ceci est la règle pour tous les dinars aghlabides.
Le mot ghalaba figurant sur la partie centrale du revers est caractéristique de la monnaie aghlabide ; il semble être l'emblème de la dynastie, qui marque ainsi son autonomie à l'égard du califat abbasside. Ce fait se confirmera un peu plus tard avec l’incorporation du nom du prince aghlabide et dans quelques cas de celui de son mawla (serviteur) chargé de la frappe.
La monnaie aghlabide était en circulation en Sicile (sous domination aghlabide depuis la conquête de l'île en 827), comme l'attestent quelques spécimens découverts lors de fouilles, conservés au musée de Caltagirone (Italie) et au Maghreb central[1].
Bien qu'elle diffère du dinar abbasside par son poids et ses dimensions, la monnaie aghlabide en est très proche, du point de vue de la formule et de la graphie. Cette parenté est également valable avec les dinars tulunides d'Égypte.
La monnaie aghlabide était très présente dans les échanges commerciaux en Méditerranée occidentale, sûrement grâce à la qualité et à la pureté de sa frappe. L’on constate qu'à l'époque de l'émirat omeyyade de Cordoue (758-912), la monnaie ne fut pas frappée en Andalousie : les dinars qui y étaient en circulation provenaient d'autres dynasties, et surtout de celle des Aghlabides, qui se sont probablement accaparé d’une partie du commerce de l'or transsaharien.
