La Fatiha, sourate al-Bakara II, 1-17
These two pages come from a Qur’an written in North African script. It constituted a bequest (habous) to the zawiyah of Sidi Sahib in 1831. The orthographical signs are marked according to the system of al-Khalil Ibn Ahmed[1]. The vowels are indicated in red, the sukun and the shaddah in blue, the hamza in yellow ochre or gilt and the hamzat al-wasl in green.
This Qur’an, which was probably calligraphed during the eighteenth century, is a fine example of the symbiosis between the Hispano-Moresque and Ottoman influences that contributed to the distinctive character of the artistic productions of Ifriqiya, even during the modern era. While the script and colours of the diacritic signs are typically North African, the decoration of the frontispiece of the Fatiha, embellished with floral motifs, was clearly influenced by the Ottoman school, itself inspired by Iranian art. The page from the Fatiha of a seventeenth-century Ottoman Qur’an in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris (BnF arabe, 433) and the frontispiece of the Sahih al-Bukhari, produced by the Turkish calligrapher Hassen Ridha Effendi, dating from 1913 and now in the Topkapi library in Istanbul[2], are good examples of the Ottoman style, which clearly influenced the Qur’an illuminations produced in Ifriqiya. Tunisian architectural decoration of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries[3] also bears the mark of the Ottoman influence that – combined with other foreign contributions (especially Hispano-Moresque and Italian) and the Tunisian identity – inspired original artistic forms.
