Ce kursî a été commandé par le sultan mamluk Muhammad ibn Qalâ'ûn. De forme hexagonale, il repose sur six pieds cylindriques et comporte une petite porte à deux battants s’ouvrant sur une étagère. Cette forme est assez courante. Le musée du Caire conserve un autre meuble en alliage cuivreux, similaire par sa forme[1], et un troisième, cette fois en bois marqueté de bois de couleurs et d’ivoire[2]. Au musée du Louvre, un plateau hexagonal provient sans doute d’un meuble du même genre[3]. Chez les Ottomans, du XVIe au début du XXe siècle, plusieurs kursî furent réalisés sur le modèle de celui d’Ibn Qalâ’ûn, certains, du XVIe siècle, directement copiés, les autres, seulement adaptés. D’autres meubles à Coran de formes diverses ont été produits en grand nombre sous les Mamluks.
Le décor ajouré et incrusté d’argent mêlent motifs végétaux, calligraphies en thuluth et en kufique tressé et blasons circulaires épigraphiés. Celui-ci s’organise en quatre registres superposés sur les faces, et de manière radiale sur le plateau. Les épigraphies, aux hampes rayonnant vers le centre, évoquent l’idée de soleil, symbolique habituelle pour un personnage princier[4]. Parmi les motifs, certains sont déjà connus en Égypte depuis longtemps, comme les spirales végétales, qui évoquent des œuvres fatimides comme des ivoires[5]. D’autres comme les vols de canards, se rencontrent couramment sur les métaux iraniens et égyptiens du XIVe siècle. Certains sont aussi nouveaux en Égypte, comme les fleurs de lotus, représentées au cœur du plateau hexagonal, qui témoignent des importants échanges qu’entretiennent l’Égypte et le monde iranien, en particulier depuis la Pax mongolica de 1326.
Les blasons circulaires et divisés en trois bandes horizontales sont caractéristiques du monde mamluk ; le fait qu’ils soient épigraphiés trahissent le statut de leur propriétaire, puisque les blasons épigraphiés, au moins durant la période Bahrite, étaient réservés aux sultans.
