Il s’agirait d’un manuscrit autographe unique de cette œuvre. La copie est soignée avec des titres à l’encre dorée et à l’encre rouge. Les vers sont ponctués de rosettes dorées rehaussées de points rouges et bleus.
L’auteur appartient au clan des Banî Buhtur de la tribu de Tanukh. Originaire de la Syrie du Nord, ce clan fut encouragé vers 1110 par les Atabeg[1] de Damas à s’établir, dans un but défensif, dans le district d’al-Gharb, au sud-est de Beyrouth, suite à la conquête de cette dernière par les Croisés. Les souverains de Damas auraient aussi fait appel à d’autres clans pour s’installer dans des zones tampons avec les États croisés, mais l’histoire des diverses tribus de cette époque est mal connue.
D’après Hours et Salibi, l’histoire de Sâlih b. Yahyâ est importante à deux points de vue. Elle est, d’une part, la seule histoire originale qui soit parvenue d’un district rural de Syrie au temps des Croisades et des Mamluks, d’autre part, une des rares sources qui permettent d’entrevoir les origines médiévales du Liban moderne. L’histoire des Buhtur se rattache à celle de l’émirat libanais, fondé par les Ma‘an du Chouf au XVIIe siècle et auxquels ils s’allièrent par mariage. Le texte comporte des observations topographiques et historiques sur la ville de Beyrouth, une chronologie des Banî Buhtur sur trois générations depuis l’ancêtre Buhtur b. ‘Alî (XIIe siècle) jusqu’à la période contemporaine de l’auteur qui mourut en 1436. En reproduisant de nombreux documents (décrets, titres d’investiture, correspondance officielle), l’ouvrage retrace en détail l’histoire des relations entre les Buhtur et les divers gouverneurs de Damas, et apporte une contribution importante à l’étude de l’administration provinciale ayyubide et mamluke, comme à celle de l’organisation féodale et militaire du pays.
Le manuscrit fut rapporté en France en 1673 pour la bibliothèque de Colbert qui contenait deux cent quarante-six manuscrits arabes et fut ensuite acquise par la Bibliothèque du Roi. Il témoigne de l'attention que les Occidentaux de l’époque, et des Français en particulier, portaient au monde oriental en raison notamment des intérêts commerciaux qui les liaient aux rivages levantins[2].
