The blue and red decoration, on a purplish ground, comprises medallions with bands decorated with pseudo-Kufic characters. Inside are turning birds facing each other as well as griffins with flowerets on either side. Other birds arranged on both sides of a tree of life decorate the corners[1].
Although the description of the inventory compiled in the early thirteenth century is not very precise, it seems that the treasury of Patmos possessed two altarcloths, similar to this shroud in terms of both colours and motifs. These altarcloths feature a decoration of griffins and other animals against a violet-crimson ground.
This fabric probably came from a chasuble, as the rounded cut of the bottom suggests. The cloth was probably reused during the translation of the remains of Saint Potentien by Archbishop Pierre de Corbeil in 1218, as a fragment of the same fabric was used for the relics of Saint Loup, probably in 1210, at the time of their solemn display by the same Pierre de Corbeil. This information suggests that the fabric of the shroud of Saint Potentien came to Sens after the sack of Constantinople by the Crusaders in 1204.
The writing on this relic shroud, related to the very decorative foliated Kufic, was used on various Byzantine monuments for purely ornamental reasons in the tenth to thirteenth centuries: this inscription is, in fact, totally illegible, and its shape only imitates Arabic letters imperfectly. It is similar to a decorative painted band in the Church of the Mother of God in Studenica, Serbia, dating from 1209.
