Le décor bleu et rouge, sur fond violacé, se compose de médaillons à la couronne ornée de caractères pseudo-kufiques. À l'intérieur se présentent des oiseaux affrontés qui se retournent ainsi que des griffons, adossés de part et d'autre de fleurons. D’autres oiseaux disposés de chaque côté d'un arbre de vie meublent les écoinçons[1].
Bien que la description de l'inventaire rédigé au début du XIIIe siècle soit peu précise, il semble que le trésor de Patmos ait possédé deux nappes d'autel apparentées, tant par leurs coloris que par leurs motifs, à ce suaire. Ces nappes présentaient un décor de griffons et d'autres animaux sur fond violet-pourpre.
Ce tissu provient probablement d'une chasuble, comme le suggère la coupe arrondie du bas. Ce tissu aurait pu être remployé lors de la translation, faite en 1218 par l'archevêque Pierre de Corbeil, des restes de saint Potentien puisqu'un fragment de la même étoffe fut utilisé pour les reliques de saint Loup, vraisemblablement en 1210, au moment de leur ostension solennelle, par le même Pierre de Corbeil. Ces indications permettent de supposer que le tissu du suaire de saint Potentien est parvenu à Sens à la suite du sac de Constantinople par les Croisés, en 1204.
L'écriture présente sur ce suaire de reliques, apparentée au kufique folié, très décorative, a été employée dans divers monuments byzantins à des fins purement ornementales entre le Xe et le XIIIe siècle : cette inscription est, en effet, totalement illisible, et sa forme n'imite les lettres arabes que de manière imparfaite. On peut la rapprocher d'un bandeau décoratif peint de l'église de la Mère-de-Dieu à Studenica, en Serbie, datant de 1209.
