Le Proche-Orient est célèbre depuis l’Antiquité pour ses verreries. C’est en Phénicie semble-t-il que fut découverte la technique du soufflage au Ier siècle de notre ère, ce qui amena un développement assez rapide des productions. Beaucoup d’objets de ces périodes et de la période romaine sont conservés. Dès le début de l’Islam, les formes et les techniques décoratives se sont multipliées : bouteilles, vases, gobelets, plats, etc.…, décors de filets ou de pastilles rapportés, d’incisions, de gravures, de millefiori, décors obtenus par moulage, verre lustré, verre marbré, verre camée. Des exemples de ces différentes techniques ont été trouvés dans plusieurs sites du IXe siècle, tant au Proche-Orient que dans les régions orientales du monde islamique.
La méthode la plus simple, utilisée pour ce petit pichet en verre bleuté, est celle du soufflage à la volée. Les artisans vénitiens ont appris cet art d’artisans syriens. Cette technique est encore utilisée nos jours en Syrie (Damas, Alep), en Égypte, plus rarement en Jordanie par les verriers traditionnels et dans les usines modernes. Le même procédé est utilisé dans le Sud de la France (Biot).
À ce petit pichet, à panse ronde surmontée d’un court col cylindrique à l’ouverture évasée, est rapportée une anse qui s’accroche sur la lèvre et l’épaule de l’objet. Son utilisation précise n’est pas attestée, peut-être était-ce un vase à parfum, dont de nombreux exemplaires étaient exportés au travers de la Méditerranée. Beaucoup d’objets similaires se retrouvent dans différents musées (musée du Louvre, musée de Damas, du Caire, et dans les musées américains consacrés à la verrerie comme celui de Toledo et le Corning Museum of Glass de New York). Le verre n’était pas réservé à la seule fabrication de récipients. Coloré dans la masse, doublé d’une feuille d’or (verre sandwich), il entrait dans la composition de mosaïques (Coupole du Rocher de Jérusalem, 691 ; Grande Mosquée de Damas, 705-715 ; et plus tard mausolée de Muhammad ibn Qalâ’ûn au Caire, 1285). Il était également utilisé pour les claustras des mosquées et des palais, dans tous les pays islamiques.
