Ce pichet mamluk se distingue par sa décoration brune sur fond crème, appliquée à la brosse et à main levée. L’artiste a divisé l’extérieur du récipient en trois registres séparés par une large ligne. Au registre supérieur, situé sur le col, il a dessiné régulièrement des triangles et des losanges qui se rejoignent au niveau de leurs pointes. Le deuxième registre, sur l’épaule, est orné de motifs de trois lignes parallèles. Enfin, le troisième registre sur la panse comporte des triangles irréguliers dessinés à main levée, plus grands que ceux du registre supérieur, à la pointe orientée vers la base. L’anse, attachée à la lèvre et sur l’épaule, est peinte de la même manière que la panse.
La pâte, granuleuse, comporte des impuretés cachées par un engobe blanc crème. La cuisson est faite à température moyenne, en deux étapes : une cuisson pour la fabrication et une autre pour fixer les couleurs.
Ce pichet servait sans doute dans la vie quotidienne, peut-être comme instrument de mesure. Les objets de ce type, déjà connus sous les Byzantins et les Omeyyades (avec des différences dans les techniques et le décor), sont répandus pendant les périodes ayyubide et mamluke. Outre les poteries peintes, on trouve aussi, en Grande Syrie, des récipients de même forme mais glacés, importés d’Égypte, de Syrie ou encore d’autres régions du monde arabe.
L’encre utilisée dans la fabrication est la même que celle utilisée dans l’écriture et l’enluminure des manuscrits islamiques. L’encre noire, couleur la plus répandue, était obtenue à partir du carbone de chênes lièges, des huiles de graines de lin et de pétrole ou de la poudre de charbon. D’autres couleurs étaient obtenues par l’oxydation de métaux, comme l’oxyde de plomb, l’oxyde de fer ou l’oxyde de cuivre.
