Les gourdes en céramique, propices à garder l’eau fraîche, munies d’anses facilitant leur transport, sont fréquentes sur les lieux de fouilles.
Le récipient est fabriqué en réunissant plusieurs éléments. Les deux faces, qui ne sont pas toujours semblables, étaient préalablement moulées, puis assemblées l’une à l’autre par un large ruban qui pour être fixé à la barbotine, nécessitait d’enlever la partie centrale de l’une des faces. Les anses modelées et le col, souvent tournés, étaient ensuite rajoutés. Le décor sur ces gourdes est la plupart du temps géométrico-floral, mais il fait aussi parfois appel à l’épigraphie, et même dans certains cas à des blasons et à des animaux.
La plupart de ces gourdes datent des époques ayyubide et mamluke et il est possible de discerner une évolution dans la forme, celles de l’époque mamluke ayant des rubans latéraux beaucoup plus larges et des faces souvent très bombées.
Cette gourde n’est pas antérieure à l’époque ayyubide ; il est même possible qu’elle soit d’époque mamluke.
