Useful for keeping water cool and equipped with handles to facilitate transport, ceramic gourds are a frequent find on archaeological sites.
This kind of recipient comprises a number of components. The two sides, not always identical, were probably moulded, then fitted together using a broad strip of clay which was attached with slip in a process that necessitated removal of the centre of one side. The modelled handles and (often) turned neck were added later. The ornamentation is for the most part geometrical-floral, but sometimes makes use of written inscriptions and even, in some cases, coats of arms[1] and animals.
Most of these gourds date from the Ayyubid and Mameluke periods, with evidence of formal evolution: the Mameluke specimens have much wider lateral strips and often very rounded sides.
This example is certainly no earlier than the Ayyubid period, and may even be Mameluke.
