Las cantimploras de cerámica, adecuadas para mantener el agua fresca, con asas para facilitar su transporte, son frecuentes en los yacimientos arqueológicos.
Este recipiente se fabricaba reuniendo varios elementos. Las dos caras, que no siempre eran similares, se moldeaban primero por separado y se ensamblaban después con una larga cinta; para fijar ésta con barbotina, era necesario quitar la parte central de una de las caras. Luego, se añadían las asas y el cuello, a menudo torneados. En este tipo de cantimploras, la decoración es geométrico-floral en su mayoría, pero, a veces, recurre también a las inscripciones y, en ciertos casos, incluso a blasones[1] y a animales.
La mayor parte de estas cantimploras datan de las épocas ayubí y mameluca. Es posible distinguir la evolución de la forma entre unas y otras, ya que las de la época mameluca tienen cintas laterales mucho más anchas y cuerpos a menudo abombados.
La cantimplora presentada aquí no es anterior a la época ayubí; es más, es posible que sea mameluca.
