La catapulte est une machine servant à assiéger une place forte. Elle est renforcée par des élévateurs nécessaires à son fonctionnement. Cette machine est arrivée dans le monde islamique à la fin du VIIe siècle, comme le prouve son utilisation pendant la période omeyyade par al-Hajjâj ibn Yûsuf al-Thaqafi lors du siège de La Mecque et de son bombardement durant quarante jours. Ces catapultes étaient composées d’un mât en bois avec un axe renforcé, situé sur une plate-forme en haut de deux tours en bois. À l’extrémité, un bras court attaché par un ensemble de cordes est pourvu d’un réceptacle pour lancer les pierres. Nous trouvons ces explications dans les livres d’histoire islamiques datant de la période de ce siège.
Les études archéologiques effectuées dans la région de Hadar en Irak ont mis au jour la première de ces catapultes lance-pierres. Il est important de signaler que les musulmans ont excellé dans la fabrication des machines dérivées des catapultes. La période mamluke est considérée comme la période islamique la plus importante pour l’utilisation de ces machines qui ont servi à repousser les attaques des Mongols après la chute de Baghdad. Elles ont notamment joué un rôle important dans la victoire de ‘Ain al-Jalut.
Parmi ces machines dérivées, nous citons les catapultes à flèches embrasées, celles à grenades enflammées ou éclairantes. Ces appareils ont été décrits par al-Qalqashandi dans son livre Subh al-A’cha, par Tarsusi et Ibn Aranbagha dans leur manuscrit Al-Aniq fi-al-Manjaniq, édité par l’Institut du Patrimoine scientifique arabe à l’Université d’Alep.
Ces machines sont citées également par Ibn Kathir dans son livre al-Bidaya wa Nihaya sous le nom de oum farwa et arrada (la machine qui lance loin), plus petite qu’une catapulte. Il est important de signaler que l’historien classique Bellini a attribué aux Crétois la première invention des catapultes et que les Phéniciens sont les inventeurs de l’arrada.
Ainsi, nous constatons que les Syriens et les Phéniciens autour du Bassin méditerranéen ont joué un rôle essentiel dans la fabrication des machines militaires qui ont été déterminantes dans les sièges des châteaux forts et pour repousser les attaques depuis l’arrière des remparts.
Ces pierres rondes de différentes tailles, faisant partie d’une collection d’archéologie musulmane, ont été trouvées dans le château d’Ajlun et sont présentées actuellement dans le musée du château. Leur poids varie de 3 à 47 kg et ils sont taillés dans une pierre calcaire. Le poids des pierres était adapté à la taille des machines utilisées.
