Le sceau du comte de Tripoli, Raymond III, montre sur l’avers son image à cheval portant armure et lance, encadrée par une inscription circulaire, et sur le revers, une représentation de la ville de Tripoli où l’on voit ses fortifications : mur et porte surmontée par une grande tour flanquée par deux plus petites. Monument emblématique de la ville, la citadelle construite par Raymond de Saint-Gilles, comte de Toulouse, au début du XIIe siècle a été complètement ravagée par un incendie en 1287 ; elle a ensuite été remaniée à maintes reprises par les Mamluks et les Ottomans, mais on peut encore y trouver les traces de certaines de ses fondations anciennes.
La présence d’un cavalier et d’un monument se trouve déjà sur les sceaux de Pons de Tripoli (1112-1136) et de son successeur Raymond II, père de Raymond III. Mais ces images ne sont pas propres à Tripoli, on les retrouve sur d’autres sceaux de princes Croisés. À partir du XIIe siècle, une représentation architecturale marque leur revers, chaque ville se distinguant par son monument emblématique : le Saint-Sépulcre où la tour de David pour Jérusalem, la cathédrale pour Tyr, la citadelle pour Tripoli. Ces mêmes images se retrouvent aussi sur les monnaies croisées. Si le cavalier, guerrier ou chasseur, n’apparaît presque pas sur les monnaies ou les sceaux islamiques, à l’exception de quelques monnaies seljukides en bronze, elle est très représentée sur tous types d’objets : métaux[1], céramiques[2] , verres[3] textiles.
L’usage des chartes pour énoncer des actes à valeur juridique, telles les donations, ventes, ou accords, était courant chez les Croisés. Ces chartes étaient validées par l’apposition de bulles de plomb (sceaux) qui constituent la forme d’authentification caractéristique de l’Orient latin. Cette pratique fut copiée des Byzantins par les Francs, les seigneurs et les prélats ayant le privilège (dit droit de coins) d’utiliser ces bulles au lieu de sceaux de cire pour valider leurs actes. Ces bulles constituent un témoignage de l’usage de l’héraldique chez les seigneurs francs qui faisaient aussi figurer leurs armoiries sur leurs bannières. Ces dernières ont disparu tout comme les archives franques, à l’exception des documents que les communautés religieuses avaient transférés en Occident. Dans le monde islamique, l’usage de sceaux est attesté déjà sous les Omeyyades (661-750) ; l’empreinte, souvent en argile, est marquée par une matrice de métal.
