El sello del conde de Trípoli, Raymond III, muestra en el anverso su imagen a caballo con armadura y lanza, enmarcada por una inscripción circular y, en el reverso, una representación de la ciudad de Trípoli, donde se ven sus fortificaciones: muro y puerta terminada por una gran torre flanqueada por dos más pequeñas. Monumento emblemático de la ciudad, la ciudadela construida por Raymond de Saint-Gilles, conde de Toulouse, a principios del siglo XII, fue completamente destruida por un incendio en 1287; a continuación, fue remodelada varias veces por los mamelucos y los otomanos, pero todavía se pueden encontrar huellas de algunas de sus antiguas fundaciones.
La presencia de un caballero y un monumento se encuentra ya en los sellos de Pons de Trípoli (1112-1136) y de su sucesor Raymond II, padre de Raymond III. Pero estas imágenes no son propias de Trípoli, se encuentran en otros sellos de príncipes cruzados. A partir del siglo XII, una representación arquitectónica marca su reverso, cada ciudad distinguiéndose por su monumento emblemático: el Santo sepulcro, o la torre de David para Jerusalén, la catedral para Tyr, la ciudadela para Trípoli. Estas mismas imágenes se encuentran también en las monedas cruzadas. Si el caballero, guerrero o cazador no aparecía prácticamente sobre las monedas o los sellos islámicos, a excepción de algunas monedas selyukidas de bronce, se representa mucho en todo tipo de objetos: metales[1], cerámicas[2], vidrios[3], tejidos...
El uso de las cartas para denunciar actos de valor jurídico, como las donaciones, ventas o acuerdos, era corriente en los cruzados. Estas cartas se validaban por la aposición de bolas de plomo (sellos), que constituyen la forma de autentificación característica del oriente latino. Esta práctica fue copiada de los bizantinos por los francos, los señores y los prelados que tenían el privilegio (llamados derecho de acuñación) de utilizar estas bolas en lugar de sellos de cera para validar sus actas. Estas bolas constituyen un testimonio del uso de la heráldica en los señores francos, que hacían también figurar sus armerías en sus estandartes. Estas últimas han desaparecido, así como los archivos francos, a excepción de los documentos que las comunidades religiosas habían transferido a Occidente. En el mundo islámico, el uso de los sellos está demostrado ya en los Omeyas (661-750); el molde, a menudo de arcilla, está marcado por una matriz de metal.
