Le tapis est entouré de trois bordures : deux bandes fleuries encadrant un bandeau décoré de rosaces sur fond rouge. Sur le champ de couleur pistache, de larges palmettes accolées sont reliées entre elles par un rinceau végétal. Il s’agit d’un exemple de la production dite « de Smyrne » avec des palmettes stylisées, des rosettes et des feuilles lancéolées dans ses bordures. Trois tapis semblables avec presque les mêmes dimensions et la même bordure se trouvent au Musée du Tapis Amir Pakzad à Hanovre. Un autre exemple mais fragmentaire appartient à la collection Bardini, tandis qu’un autre est dans la collection Ballard.
Les techniques de nouage des tapis sont introduites en Anatolie probablement dès le XIIe siècle par les populations semi-nomades comme les Turkmènes. C’est à partir de l’arrivée au pouvoir des Ottomans que les tapis de Turquie deviennent réputés en Europe, où on les préfère aux tapis persans, jugés trop chargés. Au XVIe siècle, le tapis ottoman atteint son apogée et devient un produit d’exportation vers l’Occident et la Chine. Les principaux centres de tissage sont Istanbul, Brousse, Pergame et Ushak. Pergame produit des tapis à décor géométrique, parfois peints par Holbein, et Ushak fabrique certains des fameux tapis représentés par Lorenzo Lotto.
Ce type de tapis s’inscrit dans la lignée des productions d’Ushak[1]. Il aurait été confectionné soit dans une des manufactures de la région de Smyrne (Izmir), soit à Ushak même, Smyrne n’étant alors que le centre d’exportation. Ville portuaire sur la mer Egée, elle était en effet devenue au XVIIIe siècle l’un des centres commerciaux les plus importants d’Asie Mineure, comme l’ont noté plusieurs voyageurs européens. Fabriqués rapidement, les tapis de Smyrne sont de moins bonne qualité que les productions anciennes d’Ushak. Pour mieux s’adapter aux goûts des Européens, les décors ont été agrandis. Ces tapis étaient réalisés sous le contrôle des Hollandais, en vue de leur exportation. Ils ont été concurrencés au XVIIIe siècle par des imitations européennes, françaises (manufactures d’Aubusson) et anglaises, mais ils continuèrent à être fabriqués aux XIXe et XXe siècles. Appelés tapis turcs, ils connaissent une grande vogue et continueront d’être exportés en Occident.
