This mortar is cylindrical. With, at the base, a recessed frame, the pestle is wide at its lower part to facilitate crushing. They are not decorated.
Mortars and pestles are very common utensils used for cooking and pharmacopoeia. The present piece was undoubtedly one of the main domestic tools used in one of Umm al-Walid palaces. It was preserved within the destruction fill of the palace at the beginning of the Abbasid period.
Bronze mortars have antecedents in basalt, which are still heavier than the former. Today basalt mortars are partly used to melt meat for special dishes. There are numerous examples from different periods, already attested in the transitional phase between the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods (16000 – 8500 B. C.), when simple forms of agriculture with grain yields were initiated.
