El almirez es cilíndrico. El mazo, con un refuerzo en la parte alta, se ensancha en su parte inferior para facilitar el machacado. Ninguno de estos dos elementos está decorado.
Los almireces y mazos eran elementos muy utilizados para la cocina y la farmacopea. No cabe duda de que esta pieza constituía uno de los principales instrumentos de uso doméstico del palacio de Umm al-Walid, lugar en el que se descubrió, sepultado bajo los escombros.
Antes de la aparición de los almireces de bronce, los ejemplares eran de basalto, aún más pesados. Hoy en día, se recurre aún a almireces de basalto para ablandar la carne que entra en la composición de ciertos platos. Abundan los hallazgos de almireces de diferentes épocas; algunos de ellos datan incluso del periodo de transición entre el Paleolítico y el Neolítico (de 16 000 a 8 500 a. C.), es decir, del momento en el que comenzó a practicarse la agricultura y el cultivo de grano.
