Les pilons et les mortiers sont des ustensiles très couramment utilisés pour la cuisine et la pharmacopée, et ce dès le Néolithique. Cette pièce a été retrouvée parmi les gravas du palais d’Umm al-Walîd, datant du début de la période abbasside. Avant l’apparition des mortiers en bronze, il existait des exemplaires en basalte, encore plus lourds.
Le mortier est cylindrique. Le pilon, qui présente un renfoncement à sa base, s’élargit dans sa partie basse pour faciliter le concassage. Ils ne sont pas décorés.
Les pilons et les mortiers sont des ustensiles très couramment utilisés pour la cuisine et la pharmacopée. Cette pièce fait sans aucun doute partie de l’un des principaux outils domestiques utilisés dans l’un des palais d’Umm al-Walîd. On l'a retrouvée parmi les gravas du palais datant du début de la période abbasside.
Avant l’apparition des mortiers en bronze, il existait des exemplaires en basalte, encore plus lourds. Aujourd’hui, on se sert de mortiers en basalte pour attendrir la viande pour certains plats. On a découvert de nombreux mortiers venant de différentes époques. Certains datent de la période de transition entre le Paléolithique et le Néolithique (de 16 000 à 8 500 av. J.-C.), au moment où apparut l’agriculture utilisant la récolte du grain.
