The tobacco craze swept Jordanian society in the early Ottoman period. Smoking necessitated the use of special tools and it is rare to find an early or late Ottoman site that does not provide examples of this kind of terracotta item. Making pipes was a simple, local business, requiring only small quantities of clay and performed by both men and women: during the Ottoman period smoking was not an exclusively male prerogative. Given the association of tobacco with pleasure, pipe makers added straightforward linear and geometrical embellishments to the bowl and shank, extending the latter with a reed or hollow wood stem of a length to suit the smoker in question.
Many of these pipes have been discovered on such Jordanian sites as Jabal al-Qal’a in Amman; Dawhala, Yassiliya and Yarmoun in the north of the country; and Tabaqat Fahl in the Jordan Valley. Many Jordanian museums, among them the University of Yermouk Museum and the Irbid and Amman Archaeology Department, have extensive holdings of pipes on show and in their reserves.
Ottoman pipes come in different shapes and sizes and with a range of ornamentation. In some cases the skill that has gone into their making is an accurate indication of the owner's social standing.
