Ya desde el periodo otomano, el uso del tabaco invadió Jordania, y este fenómeno de sociedad exigía el empleo de instrumentos especiales. Es poco frecuente encontrar un yacimiento del periodo otomano, precoz o tardío, que carezca de este tipo de objetos de barro cocido. La fabricación de pipas, sencilla y local, no requiere más que una pequeña cantidad de arcilla. Estos objetos eran modelados tanto por hombres como por mujeres, puesto que, en esa época, el tabaco no era prerrogativa exclusiva del sexo masculino. Dado que muchos consideraban el tabaco como un placer, los fabricantes decoraban las pipas con líneas y formas geométricas sencillas alrededor de la cazuela y del tubo, al que, según el deseo del fumador, se le añadía una boquilla más o menos larga, normalmente hecha de caña o de madera hueca.
En los yacimientos jordanos ‑tales como el de la ciudadela de Ammán (Jabal al-Qal’a); Dawhala, Yassiliya y Yarmun en el norte de Jordania; o el de Pella (Tabaqat Fahl) en el valle del Jordán‑, se ha hallado gran cantidad de estos objetos, y numerosos museos jordanos conservan aún muchos ejemplares de pipas, en exposición o en reserva (por ejemplo, Museo de la Universidad de Yarmouk, Departamento General de Arqueología de Irbid y de Ammán).
Las pipas otomanas tenían tamaños, formas y decoraciones variadas. La riqueza de algunas ornamentaciones y la delicadeza de la confección pueden, en algunos casos, dar una indicación sobre el rango social de sus propietarios.
