L’usage du tabac, véritable phénomène de société, s’est répandu en Jordanie dès la période ottomane, pour les hommes comme pour les femmes. Les fourneaux de pipe en argile étaient fabriqués localement. Des décors linéaires et géométriques simples étaient appliqués sur le fourneau, auquel était ajouté un embout en roseau ou en bois creux plus ou moins long. Les pipes ottomanes présentaient différentes tailles, formes et décors, dont le degré de finesse pouvait refléter le rang social du propriétaire.
L’usage du tabac a envahi la Jordanie dès la période ottomane. Ce phénomène de société nécessitait l’utilisation d’outils spéciaux. Il est rare de trouver un site datant de la période ottomane, précoce ou tardive, ne contenant pas ce genre d’objet en terre cuite. La fabrication des pipes, simple et locale, ne nécessite qu’une faible quantité d’argile. Ces objets étaient modelés par les hommes et les femmes, car l’usage du tabac pendant la période ottomane n’était pas exclusivement réservé au sexe masculin. Étant donné que l’usage du tabac était considéré par beaucoup comme un plaisir, les fabricants de pipes y appliquaient des décors linéaires et géométriques simples autour du fourneau et sur le petit tube attaché, auquel était ajouté un embout plus ou moins long selon le désir du fumeur, habituellement fabriqué en roseau ou en bois creux.
Nombre de ces objets furent découverts dans des sites jordaniens comme Jabal al-Qal’a à Amman, également à Dawhala, Yassiliya et Yarmoun au nord de la Jordanie, et dans la vallée du Jourdain (Tabaqat Fahl). De nombreux musées jordaniens conservent encore beaucoup d’exemplaires de pipes, exposés ou en réserve (musée de l’Université de Yermouk, Département général d’archéologie d’Irbid et d’Amman).
Les pipes ottomanes présentaient différentes tailles, formes et décors. La richesse de certains décors, associée à une vraie finesse dans la fabrication, peut dans quelques cas donner une bonne indication quant au rang social des propriétaires.
