The religious brotherhood of the Mawlawiyya (or Mevelevi), the oldest Anatolian Sufi brotherhood, gets its name from Mawlana, "Our Master", attributed to Jalal Al-Din Rumi (1207-1273). From eastern Iran, this poet fled the Mongol invasion and sought refuge in Anatolia, at Konya, the capital of the Rum Seljukide. He is the author of the collection of Mathnawî, one of the apogees of mystic poetry. Established at Konya in the thirteenth century, the brotherhood of the Mawlawiyya spread throughout the Muslim world, especially during the Ottoman period when it developed strong ties with the powers in place. Its members were called the Whirling Dervishes as a result of their musical and choreographic ritual.
Of Arab origin, the use of the term "takkiya" (tekke in Turkish), referring to an establishment dedicated to a group of Sufis, apparently developed in the Ottoman context from the sixteenth century. The Successor of the khanqa of Egypt and Syria, and the ribat of North Africa, the takkiya seems to have developed as a result of the expansion, in the Ottoman Empire, of Turkish brotherhoods organized and controlled by the State. Like the khanqa, the takkiya usually has a mosque and cells, sometimes a madrasa, but it distinguishes itself by the presence of a large domed room, the sama’ khana, devoted to the specific rituals of these brotherhoods.
Built in the beginning of the seventeenth century by an Ottoman governor, the takkiya of Tripoli is the largest of the seven takkiya of the order of the Mawlawiyya built outside of Turkey. An idea of the size and importance of the building is provided by the description of Al-Nabulsi, who visited Tripoli in 1700, and by the descriptions and etchings of European travellers in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, for example those of Cornelis de Bruijn (d. 1727), on his visit in 1714.
Located on the outskirts of Al-Zaytun on the slope of Abu Samra Hill which borders the Abu ‘Ali River, the monument is currently abandoned because it was seriously damaged during the civil war in the 1980s. Its façade has two huge arches in addition to two units with two superimposed arches. The structure of the buildings rests, on the ground floor, on a system of large vaults and arcades. Above there are two other levels that included some iwan, courtyards, basins, a mosque, as well as a great room (sama’ khana), now destroyed, originally covered with a large dome, where the rituals of the brotherhood were held. The ornamentation is limited to an ablaq arch on a door, topped with a rectangle bearing an inscription that mentions a restoration in 1770-71.
