La cofradía religiosa de los Mawlawîyya (o Mevelevi), la más antigua de las cofradías sufíes anatolias, toma su nombre del título de Mawlânâ, «nuestro maestro», atribuido a Jalâl al-Dîn Rûmî (1207-1273). Originario de Irán oriental, este poeta huye la invasión mongola y se refugia en Anatolia, en Konya, capital de los Selyukidas de Rum. Es el autor de la selección de los Mathnawî, uno de los mejores libros de la poesía mística. Establecida en Konya en el siglo XIII, la hermandad de los Mawlawîyya se propagó en el mundo musulmán, sobre todo en la época otomana, donde empezó a relacionarse mucho con el poder. Sus miembros fueron llamados los derviches giratorios por su ritual musical y coreográfico.
De origen árabe, el uso del término takkiya (tekke en su forma turca), que designa un establecimiento dedicado a un grupo de sufíes, se habría desarrollado en contexto otomano a partir del siglo XVI. Heredera de la khanqâ de Egipto y de Siria y del ribât de África del Norte, la takkiya se habría desarrollado por el auge, en el imperio otomano, de las hermandades turcas organizadas y controladas por el estado. Como la khanqâ, la takkiya comporta generalmente una mezquita y celdas, a veces una madrasa; pero se distingue por la presencia de una gran sala con cúpula, la samâ’ khâna, dedicada a los rituales específicos de estas hermandades.
Construida a principios del siglo XVII por un gobernador otomano, la takkiya de Trípoli era la más grande de las siete takkiya de la orden de los Mawlawîyya construidas fuera de Turquía. Una idea del tamaño de la importancia del edificio nos la da la descripción de al-Nâbulsî, que visitó Trípoli en 1700, y las descripciones y grabaciones de viajeros europeos en los siglos XVIII y XIX, siguiendo el ejemplo de Cornelis de Bruijn (m. 1727), durante su viaje en 1714.
Situado en el barrio al-Zaytûn en la falda de la colina de Abû Samra que bordea el río Abû ‘Alî, el monumento está actualmente abandonado, ya que fue seriamente dañado por la guerra civil en los años 1980. Su fachada comporta dos vastos arcos, además de dos unidades que contienen dos arcos superpuestos. La estructura de los edificios reposa, en la planta baja, sobre un sistema de grandes bóvedas y arcadas. Encima se encuentran otros dos niveles que comprendían iwân, patios, estanques, una mezquita, así como una gran sala (samâ’ khâna) originalmente cubierta de una gran cúpula y actualmente destruida, donde se celebraban rituales de la hermandad. La decoración se reduce a un arco en ablaq sobre una puerta, terminada con un panel rectangular que lleva una inscripción que mencionó una restauración en 1770-71.
