Lorsque ce verre eut mille ans, on le présenta au Comte Palatin Ludwig Philipsen : 1643
Ce gobelet tronconique posé sur une base circulaire est réalisé dans un verre épais. Son décor est taillé à la roue, selon une technique déjà connue sous les Sassanides, puis pratiquée en Irak sous les Abbasides ; cela lui permet d’imiter le cristal de roche en créant des motifs aux arêtes vives. Le décor est animalier : un aigle et deux lions très stylisés, dont les poils et la crinière sont figurés par des triangles emplis de lignes parallèles. .
Cet objet appartient à une série de treize gobelets, tous conservées en Occident[1] ; ils tirent leur nom d’une une sainte allemande, Edwige de Silésie (1147 - 1243), qui en possédait deux. Ils seraient arrivées en Europe durant les Croisades, rapportés par les pèlerins de retour des Lieux Saints.
Il est difficile d’établir le lieu de fabrication de ces objets : certains chercheurs ont avancé l’hypothèse de Byzance ou de la Sicile normande, d’autres ont évoqué une production fatimide. En effet, cette dynastie fut le centre d’une importante activité de taille du cristal et du verre, avec des liens indéniables entre les deux disciplines : au Corning Museum of Glass se trouve une aiguière en verre camée[2] (une technique où la couche de verre supérieure, colorée, est taillée pour de détacher en relief sur le fond incolore de la couche inférieure), qui imite des modèles en cristal, dont le plus beau est conservé au trésor de Saint-Marc de Venise[3]. De plus, les motifs, bien qu’ils aient des affinités stylistiques avec la Sicile normande (yeux globuleux, position de la tête, des pattes et de la queue que l’on retrouve sur le manteau de Roger II)[4], sont très fréquents dans le monde fatimide. On trouve notamment, dans le trésor de Saint-Marc de Venise, un gobelet hémisphérique en verre taillé où figure un lion très stylisé ; il est attribué à l’Egypte ou à l’Iran du Xe siècle. Les lions et les aigles, animaux symboliques liés à l’idée de pouvoir, sont également très fréquents dans le cristal de roche, les textiles et les ivoires.
Sous le pied de ce verre, on trouve une inscription en vieil allemand gravée à la pointe de diamant, qui commémore la présentation de l’objet à un Comte Palatin en 1643, marque de l’estime dans laquelle on pouvait tenir cet objet en Occident.
