Ce pan de châle ou de turban est un fragment de tirâz au fond noir qui s’achève par des franges torsadées issues des fils de chaine. Comme habituellement sur ce type de production, son décor s’organise en deux bandes horizontales placées aux extrémités de la pièce. La principale est cernée de part et d’autre de deux liserés enserrant des ocelles. Au centre, des motifs aux couleurs vives de chameaux passant sont séparés par des rangées de rosettes blanches placées sur un fond rouge. Entre ces motifs, des paires d’animaux stylisés se font face.
Dans le second bandeau, plus étroit, se déploie une inscription en caractère kufiques, une suite de vœux qui mentionne aussi la provenance de la pièce, le « tirâz public ». Les hampes fleuronnées et les excroissances des extrémités des lettres permettent de l’attribuer aux productions de Metwal dans le Fayoum[1], où l’institution du tirâz est active jusqu’aux Xe-XIe siècles. Les espaces entre les lettres sont ornés de dessins de petits animaux stylisés et des points regroupés formant des motifs géométriques.
Produites dans les manufactures califales, ces bandes étaient brodées ou tissées de formules votives. Elles mentionnaient le nom du souverain, parfois celui du fonctionnaire dirigeant l’atelier et son lieu de fabrication. Ces ornements étaient offerts par le calife afin d’honorer des personnages choisis. Cette distinction officielle faisait partie des prérogatives califales. La présence sur ce tirâz de l’expression « tirâz public » indique peut-être l’existence de manufactures produisant des pièces destinées aussi à des particuliers, probablement construites par Ahmad ibn Tûlûn. Un grand nombre de ces pièces étaient moins raffinées et présentaient parfois des inscriptions maladroites, voire des pseudo-inscriptions.
L’origine précise de l’institution du tirâz est inconnue, on y a vu des liens avec l’Orient ancien, ou avec le clavus romain (bandes qui descendaient sur l’épaule et empiétaient en arrière sur le dos), insigne des sénateurs et des chevaliers, peut-être transmis au monde islamique par l’intermédiaire des coptes et de Byzance.
[1] Le Fayoum est une région d’Égypte. Elle est citée par Goethe dans son dictionnaire et par certains historiens et géographes qui ont noté que la toponymie urbaine de Fayoum était Chdat, qui signifie « île » car elle était située lors de sa formation sur le lac de Maurice. Son nom religieux est Persebek qui signifie le « crocodile » car ce dernier était vénéré par les habitants de Fayoum. Pour cette raison, les Romains lui attribuèrent le nom crocodilopolis la « ville du crocodile », les coptes lui donnèrent le nom de Phiom prononcé par la suite Fayyûm par les Arabes.
