This kind of bracelet is found on Mediterranean archaeological sites, including Saudi Arabia, of all periods. They are of two sizes a larger one for grown women and a smaller one for girls. They indicate that the Ayyubids, Mamelukes and Ottomans set considerable store by personal adornment for both adults and children. Rings of the same material, once again for women and girls, have also been found.
The bracelets, additionally known in iron and bronze versions, are a simple ring whose cross-section is circular or semi-circular. Their irregular thickness points to hasty manufacture and insufficiently precise workmanship.
In some cases transparent, in others not, those made of glass paste are either single-coloured or embellished with glass-paste encrustations of various colours.
The commonest colours among the bracelets found on Ayyubid, Mameluke and Ottoman sites in Jordan are white, black, dark blue, gold-green, bright green, orange, red and light brown. This variety was obtained by the addition of metal oxides, whose use probably depended on local availability of different ores.
So far this type of costume jewellery has not been studied in any detail in Jordan.
