Les céramiques en terre cuite fabriquées au début de la période islamique étaient en majorité non décorées. Leurs formes présentent une continuité avec les périodes byzantine et sassanide mais il existe une différence dans la pâte, la technique de fabrication et la préparation. Ces objets étaient en majorité des jarres destinées à stocker de l’eau en quantité ; on trouve également des pots de contenances variées. Bien que certains exemplaires portent un décor, celui-ci était en général très simple, souvent composé de motifs géométriques ou végétaux, ciselés dans la pâte ou modelés en saillie. Certains étaient également pourvus de sceaux, circulaires ou non. Nombre de ces objets, datant des VIIIe, IXe et Xe siècles, sont exposés au Metropolitan Museum de New York.
Cet objet, mis au jour lors des fouilles de Dhiban réalisées en 2002, fait partie de la catégorie des jarres de stockage d’époque abbasside. Au vu des traces présentes sur le corps du récipient, il a probablement été façonné grâce à un tour fonctionnant à la roue. Il possédait à l’origine une anse et un couvercle réalisés dans la même pâte. À l’intérieur furent découvertes seize pièces de monnaie en argent datant de l’époque mamluke, précisément des règnes des sultans al-Zâhir Baybars (r. 1260 - 1277), al-Mansûr Qalâ’ûn (r. 1280 - 1290) et al-Nâsir Muhammad (r. 1294 - 1340, avec interruptions). La présence de pièces de monnaie dans un objet en terre cuite datant d’une période antérieure indique que seule la fonctionnalité de l’objet (et non la date de sa fabrication) était importante pour l’utilisateur.
Le phénomène des trésors monétaires conservés dans des jarres, parfois complétés par des bijoux, était largement répandu en Jordanie[1], ainsi que dans de nombreux pays du monde islamique (Irak, Égypte, Syrie, Liban). De nombreux musées de par le monde possèdent ce genre d’objets, notamment le Musée National de Damas, le Musée d’Art islamique du Caire, le musée du Louvre à Paris et le British Museum de Londres.
