Les potiers égyptiens et syriens ont utilisé à la fin du XIIe siècle des formes décoratives et des méthodes de fabrication qui étaient connues à l’époque fatimide. Cela paraît clair en ce qui concerne les récipients monochromes imitant la porcelaine et les céladons chinois. À côté de ces récipients fabriqués au Proche-Orient dès le XIIe siècle, d’autres fabriqués à partir du XIIe siècle présentent un décor peint sous glaçure transparente alcaline et plombifère, de couleur très variable : incolore, bleue, turquoise, verte, aubergine. La plupart de ces objets ayyubides et mamluks provenaient de Syrie (Raqqa, Rusafa, Hamma, Balis Meskeneh) et d’Égypte, où une production particulière faite de décors d’engobe sur engobe et gravés ornait des objets en terre argileuse rougeâtre. Leurs techniques s’inspiraient des productions iraniennes d’époque seljukide.
La coupe du musée d’Amman, sur base annulaire et paroi à larges godrons, est un bon exemple du décor peint sous glaçure de l’époque mamluke, où les couleurs utilisées étaient surtout le bleu et le noir. À l’extérieur, elle s’orne d’une succession de bandeaux noirs. À l’intérieur, le décor rayonnant dont les segments sont séparés par des bandes noires soulignées de blanc présente en alternance dans les zones les plus étroites, un motif de demi palme et d’épigraphie ; dans les zones les plus larges un grand motif floral faisant penser à un arbre : l’axe vertical est cerné de petites feuilles, la partie haute formée d’une pomme de pin à résille d’où s’échappe une couronne d’efflorescences. Le décor rayonnant était très apprécié au Proche-Orient arabe et en Iran au XIVe siècle et se rencontre aussi dans d’autres techniques décoratives, en particulier celle du lustre métallique. Les décors d’arbres stylisés se retrouvent dans certaines céramiques hispano-mauresques.
