In the late twelfth century Egyptian and Syrian potters were using production methods and ornamentation already known in the Fatimid Period, as can be seen clearly in the monochrome receptacles imitating Chinese porcelain and celadon ware. In addition to these items, which began to be made in the Near East in the twelfth century, others of the same period are characterised by painted ornamentation under a transparent alkaline-lead glaze in a chromatic range including colourless, blue, turquoise, green and aubergine. Most of these Ayyubid and Mameluke pieces come from Syria – Raqqa, Rusafa, Hamma, Balis Meskeneh – and Egypt, where one particular variety features incised slip-on-slip decoration on red clay items. These techniques drew their inspiration from Iranian work of the Seljukid era.
With its ringed base and broad gadrooning, this piece from the museum in Amman is a good example of Mameluke underglaze work, for which the principal colours were blue and black. The outside is adorned with a series of black bands. On the inside, the segments of the radiating decoration are separated by black bands edged with white. The narrow areas present a half-palm motif and inscriptions, while in the broad areas is a large floral pattern suggestive of a tree: its vertical axis is flanked by small leaves, and its top takes the form of a mesh-patterned pine cone surrounded by efflorescences. Radiating decoration was very popular in the Arabic Near East and Iran in the fourteenth century and is also to be found in other decorative media, notably lustreware. The stylised tree can also be seen in certain Hispano-Moorish ceramics.
