Ce coffret rectangulaire est surmonté d’un couvercle taluté. Cinquante sept plaques d’onyx rectangulaires, semi-circulaires, ou circulaires figurant parfois des portes surmontées d’arcs outrepassés, sont insérées dans une structure d’argent ciselé et niellé fixée sur une âme de bois. De petites roses d’argent masquent les jonctions entre les différentes plaques, à l’avant et à l’arrière. Le couvercle est doté d’une charnière au dos et d’une serrure à l’avant ornée d’éléments végétaux. La partie supérieure du couvercle est munie d’une poignée de facture moderne, probablement ajoutée au XIXe siècle. La base du coffret, une plaque d’argent, est un ajout de l’époque gothique.
En ce qui concerne la disposition de tous ces éléments, Marta Poza affirme qu’elle ne peut être arbitraire et que sur la partie inférieure les « deux fers à cheval situés de part et d’autre et d’assez grande taille font écho à la composition des portails d’entrée des temples. ». Ce coffret était probablement utilisé comme reliquaire ou réserve eucharistique. Deux autres coffrets en argent niellé provenant également de Saint Isidore de Léon sont conservés au Museo Archeológico Nacional de Madrid.
L’origine de cet objet est incertaine. Ce type de coffret était autant utilisé par les Musulmans que par les Chrétiens. Les chercheurs l’ont parfois attribué à un royaume de Taifa andalou et parfois à quelque atelier des royaumes chrétiens du nord de la péninsule. Gomez Moreno évoque une possible origine hispano-musulmane, aux vues de certains éléments comme les formes d’arcs outrepassés. Cependant la plupart des spécialistes situent son origine dans l’atelier de Léon, actif au milieu du XIe siècle, sous les ordres du roi Fernando Ier y Sancha. Néanmoins, d’autres éléments tels que le motif tressé permettent de faire le lien avec l’art asturien ; ce coffret a en effet été comparé à de nombreuses reprises au coffret aux agates qu’offrit Furela II à la Cathédrale d’Oviedo en 910.
Le professeur John W. Williams rejette la possibilité d’une origine islamique, dans la mesure où aucun objet islamique ne contient d’agate de forme similaire à celle-ci. Selon lui, bien que la disposition des bandes d’argent entrelacées, imitant les célèbres nœuds de Constantin,rappelle des détails de manuscrits islamiques, ils se retrouvent aussi dans des manuscrits chrétiens du Xe siècle.
