(« Ce dinar a été frappé en al-Andalus en en l’an 98 »).
Ce dinar fut produit dans les premiers siècles de l’histoire d’al-Andalus ; il constitue l’un des premiers témoignages écrits de la présence arabe dans la Péninsule ibérique. Il s’orne à l’avers d’une étoile cernée d’une légende circulaire en caractères latins ; au revers, il porte une inscription arabe.
Ce dinar témoigne de l’interruption de la tradition numismatique antérieure : ce sont les patrons des solidus byzantins de Carthage qui sont repris ici. Lors de leur première expansion, les arabes adoptèrent les modèles de monnaies byzantines et perses. En al-Andalus, dans les premières années qui suivent la conquête, c’est le type byzantin qui fut adopté. Cette influence est aussi sensible dans le motif d’étoile présent sur l’avers.
Les opinions sont partagées quant à la signification de cette étoile, il est possible, selon Antonio Delgado et Alberto Canto, qu’elle représente Hespéris, l’astre du couchant, qui depuis l’époque classique est associé aux régions occidentales, en particulier à l’Hispania. Il est possible d’accepter cette théorie si l’on songe que les Arabes sont entrés dans la péninsule ibérique après être passés, via la Syrie et Carthage, par les provinces byzantines où la tradition hellénistique était bien ancrée. Par ailleurs, deux lieux de frappe sont mentionnés sur cette pièce : sur l’avers apparaît Spania, et sur le revers, pour la première fois de l’histoire, le toponyme al-Andalus.
