Ermitage de Cuatrovitas

Cette mosquée transformée en ermitage est située dans l’aljarafe, un des plus riches districts de la province de Séville, à quelques cinq kilomètres de Bollulos de la Mitacion. La salle de prière, constituée de trois nefs perpendiculaires au mur qibli, est couverte par une charpente en bois qui a été refaite ; elle comprend des files d’arcades composées de cinq arcs originellement outrepassés placés dans de profonds encadrements rectangulaires (alfiz), s’échappant de piliers à section carré.
Au nord de l’ermitage s’élève un minaret quadrangulaire en briques pourvu sur toutes ses faces de petites arcades aveugles géminées, outrepassées ou polylobées. A l’intérieur, il abrite un escalier à vis couvert en berceau continu. L’orientation de l’édifice religieux changea quand il fut transformé en ermitage chrétien. On élimina le mihrâb, et on ajouta un portique et deux croix latérales. On a pu retrouver le petit patio et l’empreinte de la porte d’accès à la salle de prière au cours des restaurations entreprises.
Le fait qu’il s’agisse d’un des rares exemples relativement complet de mosquée hispano-musulmane arrivée jusqu’à nous donne au monument un singulier intérêt. L’ermitage de Cuatrobitas, Cuatrovitas, Cuatrovitan ou Cuatrohabitan (les quatre formes se rencontrent dans les textes), fut probablement une mosquée rurale, associée à un hameau, ou peut-être situé à un croisement de routes important. Il s’agit d’une mosquée mineure, version simplifiée des grandes mosquées andalouses d’époque almohade. Le plan en trois nefs perpendiculaires au mur qibli se place dans la tradition hispano-musulmane, bien qu’on ne puisse pas écarter la possibilité d’une mosquée plus ancienne à laquelle on aurait ajouté un minaret dans les années qui suivirent la construction de la Giralda.
Son minaret est la réplique simplifiée et réduite des tours almohades d’où il tire ses proportions harmonieuses. Dans l’église de San Pedro de Sanlucar la Grande et dans la Hacienda de Lerena (Huevar, province de Séville) ont été conservées deux tours d’une belle simplicité que l’on peut mettre en relation avec le minaret de Cuatrovitas.
