“In the Name of God the Benefactor, the Merciful. May God Bless our Lord Muhammad and His family. ‘Say: It is tremendous tidings / Whence ye turn away!’ – Qur’an 38:67–68 – This is the tomb of she who has need of the mercy of God, who beseeches His mercy, ‘Awn, daughter of the sheikh, the haji, the deceased Abu ‘Abd Allah Muhammad, son of the sheikh, the haji, Abu-l-Rabi ‘Sulayman al-Makni al-Banzarti. She passed away on the night of 25 Safar 765 / Saturday, 2 December 1363.”
This disc-shaped, white marble stela, encircled with a pointed horseshoe arch and resting on a rectangular plinth, is decorated with a text of seven lines circumscribed by a listel and covering the entire surface. The relief cursive script is dense and spread over one or two levels. It is characterised by smooth ligatures, oblique bevelled letter endings, appendices that are semicircular or feature smooth lines, as well as by the presence of diacritics and orthographic signs.
The form of this stela appeared for the first time during the Hafsid period and has no equivalent in the post-Hilalian funerary stelae. This type already appeared on the stelae of the Islamic Near East, especially in Egypt. It was found shortly afterwards in the Muslim West, notably in Sicily.
The Hafsid stelae share many similarities with the technique, form and style of the inscriptions of the mosques and funerary stelae of Morocco, Andalusia[1], and Algeria[2]. In Tlemcen, during the Beni Zayyan period (1236–1512), the stelae were quadrangular[3], but the text is framed by a horseshoe arch reminiscent of the shape of the disc-shaped stelae, which only appeared later. During the Ottoman period, this type of stela was fashionable in the Ottoman North African provinces – and remains so to this day.
