Inscription, en graphie naskhi : « Au Nom de Dieu Le Bienfaiteur, le Miséricordieux. Bénédiction de Dieu sur notre seigneur Muhammad et sa famille. Dis : Ceci est une prophétie capitale à laquelle vous vous opposez. - Cor.XXXVIII, 67-68 - Ceci est la tombe de celle qui a besoin de la miséricorde de Dieu, qui implore sa grâce, ‘Awn, fille du cheikh le pèlerin, le défunt, Abù ‘Abd Alläh Muhammad, fils du cheikh, le pèlerin, Abù-l-Rabï ‘Sulaymän al-Makni al-Banzarti. Elle est décédée la nuit du 25 Safar 765 / la nuit du samedi 2 décembre 1363.
Cette stèle discoïdale en marbre blanc, cernée d’un arc outrepassé agrémenté d’une pointe et posée sur un socle rectangulaire est ornée d’un texte composé de 7 lignes délimitées par un listel et réparties sur toute la surface. La graphie cursive sculptée en relief est dense et répartie sur un à deux niveaux. Elle se caractérise par des ligatures souples, des terminaisons de caractères en biseau oblique, des appendices en arc de cercle ou en ligne souple, ainsi que par la présence de points diacritiques et de signes orthographiques.
La forme de cette stèle apparaît pour la première fois à l'époque hafside et n'a pas d'équivalent dans les stèles funéraires post-hilaliennes. Ce type apparaît déjà sur des stèles du Proche-Orient islamique, surtout en Égypte. On le retrouve peu après en Occident musulman, notamment en Sicile.
Les stèles hafsides présentent beaucoup de similarités avec les techniques d’exécution, la forme et le style de graphie des inscriptions des mosquées et des stèles funéraires du Maroc, d’Andalousie[1], et d’Algérie[2]. A Tlemcen, à l'époque des Beni Zayyan (1236-1512), si les formes des stèles sont quadrangulaires[3], le texte est encadré par un arc très outrepassé rappelant la forme des stèles discoïdales, qui n'apparaitront que plus tard. A l’époque ottomane ce type de stèle resta en vogue dans les provinces turques maghrébines, ce jusqu'à l'époque contemporaine.
