This plank is from the ceiling of the prayer hall of the Great Mosque of Kairouan. The decorations in green, light brown and dark brown stand out against the red ground of the panel. Four square curvilinear cartouches suggest the image of a large, full-blown flower whose centre comprises an eight-branched central star; soft stems are traced out to form two four-lobed overlapping rosettes; they terminate in trilobed fleurons.
Such painted woodwork was in use from the Umayyad era[1] until the Abassid era[2] and was also found in Andalusia[3]. Some elements of the ceiling of the Great Mosque of Kairouan are displayed at the Institut du monde arabe in Paris. The motif of rosettes within a square was found for a considerable length of time on stucco, ceramic and wooden decorations of Hispano-Mauresque monuments.
