Ce Coran est ouvert à la page du verset du Trône, ‘âyat al-kursî, qui se trouve dans la deuxième sourate, appelée al-baqara (« la vache ») [sourate II, verset 255]. Ce verset important dans la foi musulmane a des vertus protectrices.
De format vertical, les pages de ce coran sont composées de onze lignes d’écriture cursive à l’encre noire sur papier oriental. Les différents versets sont séparés par de petites rosaces dorées dont le cœur est bleu et les pétales séparés de petits points rouges. Sur la page de gauche, Le début du verset du Trône est précédé d’un bandeau enluminé terminé par une palmette. Les voyelles brèves (tashkîl, système de vocalisation) ainsi que les signes diacritiques sont indiqués, permettant ainsi de lire aisément le texte. Les voyelles brèves sont marquées par des signes de vocalisation : fatha, voyelle « a », kasra, voyelle « i », et damma, voyelle « ou ». Ce système a été instauré par le philologue et grammairien Khalîl ibn Ahmad al-Farahidî (m. 786) pour remplacer le système utilisant les points colorés adoptés par Abû al-Aswad al-Dualî (m. 688). L’utilisation des points pour différencier les consonnes a été crée par al-Hajjâj ibn Yûsuf al-Taqafî (694-714).
L’écriture de ce manuscrit est du muhaqqaq. Elle se caractérise par des lettres amples à faible courbure, des déliés allongés aux hautes hampes qui offrent un élan horizontal. C’est une graphie très utilisée pour les corans verticaux de grands formats, produits dans le monde musulman occidental et notamment en Égypte mamlouke à partir du XIIIe et jusqu’au XVe siècle. Elle fut également très prisée en Perse et sous les Ilkhanides durant cette même période.
Le calligraphe et l’enlumineur ont apporté un soin particulier aux deux premières pages du coran où figurent la première sourate, al-fâtiha, (sourate d’ouverture) et le début de la sourate II, al-baqara. Leurs versets s’articulent sur six lignes d’écriture à l’encre noire inscrites sur un fond floral. Des cartouches comportent les titres des sourates écrits dans une graphie à l’encre blanche sur fond bleu. Des bandeaux ornés d’un motif de tresse dorée encadrent les cartouches et le texte. Ce motif de tresse est habituellement fréquent dans les manuscrits du Maghreb.
