The text on this double page spread from a Qur’an is contained within a gilded frame surrounded by a fine blue line. It comprises short surahs, known as Makkīyah, which correspond with the surahs revealed to the Prophet at Mecca. Conversely, the long surahs are known as Madanīyah because they were revealed to Him in Medina.
On the right-hand page, the first three lines of the text constitute the end of the surah al-zalzala (‘The Quake’[1], surah 99, verses 2 to 8). This surah is separated from the next by a gilded cartouche surrounded by a blue line, which contains the title of the surah al-`adayyāt (‘The Chargers’, surah 100, verses 1 to 11) in white thuluth script on a blue background. The verses are skilfully inscribed in black ink in fine muhaqqaq script, whose diacritic dots and vowels are also in black. On older manuscripts, these reading systems were in different colours, often in red. Muhaqqaq, a fine and fluid script, was greatly prized by copyists who produced Mamluk Qur’ans from the thirteenth to fifteenth century. Its use spread to Iraq and Iran for vertical large format volumes, like the example presented here. Thuluth script was often combined with muhaqqaq script (as is the case here) in Egyptian volumes.
As in the preceding surahs in this Qur’an, the verses in the surahs that follow—al-qāri`a (‘The Striking One’, surah 101, verses 1 to 11) and al-takāthur (‘The Mutual Rivalry’, surah 102, verses 1 to 8)—are separated by small gilded rosettes. Several decorative medallions indicating the groups of verses ornament the margins. The illuminator took care to give each group its own particular ornament. Some are crowned by a point or decorated with arabesque, and the ensemble is enhanced with gold and blue outlines, creating a harmony between the text and the decorations on the double page spread of this manuscript.
