Cette double page de Coran présente le texte inséré dans un cadre doré cerné d’une fine ligne bleue. Elle comporte des sourates courtes, dites « mecquoises » (makkiyya) qui correspondent aux sourates révélées au Prophète à La Mecque. À l’inverse, les sourates longues sont dites madaniyya car elles lui ont été livrées à Médine.
Sur la page de droite, les trois premières lignes de texte constituent la fin de la sourate al-zalzala (« Le tremblement de terre »[1], sourate 99, versets 2 à 8). Cette sourate est séparée de la suivante par un cartouche doré encadré d’une ligne bleue dans lequel le titre de la sourate al-`adayyât (« Les coursiers rapides », sourate 100, versets 1 à 11) est en graphie tuluth blanche sur un fond bleu. Les versets sont inscrits en muhaqqaq soigné à l’encre noire dont les points diacritiques et les voyelles sont de la même couleur. Sur les manuscrits plus anciens, ces systèmes de lecture étaient de couleurs différentes, souvent en rouge. Le muhaqqaq, une écriture fine et fluide, était très prisée par les copistes pour les corans mamlouks du XIIIe au XVe siècle. Son usage s’était étendu en Irak et en Iran pour des volumes de grand format verticaux comme pour notre exemplaire présenté ici. Il était fréquent, comme ici, que le tuluth soit associé au muhaqqaq dans les volumes égyptiens.
Les sourates suivantes de notre Coran, al-qâri`a (« Celle qui fracasse », sourate 101, versets 1 à 11) et al-takâthur (« La rivalité », sourate 102, versets 1 à 8) tout comme les précédentes voient leurs versets séparés par de petites rosaces dorées. Plusieurs médaillons décoratifs ou indiquant les groupes de versets ornent les marges. L’enlumineur a pris soin de leur apporter à chacun un ornement particulier. Certains sont couronnés d’une pointe ou décorés d’une arabesque, le tout rehaussé d’or et cerné de bleu conférant ainsi un équilibre entre le texte et le décor de la double page de ce manuscrit.
