Constitué de deux demi-sphères qui s’ajustent, ce brûle-parfum était muni à l’origine d’un cardan qui maintenait à l’horizontale - quelle que soit la position de l’objet - la coupelle où l’on déposait le charbon, l’encens ou les substances odorantes destinées à combustion. A l’extérieur, le décor repercé est distribué en registres. Il se compose pour l’essentiel d’une pseudo-écriture arabe, constituée de nœuds coufiques et de hampes tressées entre lesquels s’intercalent des rondeaux garnis de feuillages.
Le concept du brûle-parfum sphérique vient, semble-t-il, de Chine. On a trouvé des exemplaires en argent de format un peu plus réduit, datant de l’époque des Tang, et qui comportaient des chaînes de suspension. Des globes d’aspect similaire, accrochés au plafond des édifices, figurent également dans quelques rares miniatures persanes. Toutefois, c’est de la Syrie que proviennent, au XIIIe siècle les premiers exemplaires musulmans datés (règne des Ayyoubides). Au cours du XIVe siècle, ces globes métalliques fabriqués en Syrie et en Egypte mameloukes passèrent en Occident chrétien et rencontrèrent un grand succès. Ils furent employés à la fois comme brûle-parfums et comme chaufferettes pour les mains. On les plaçait dans les églises, sur la pierre des autels. Dans la demeure des riches, on les faisait rouler sur le tapis de table, entre les convives.
Le nombre de ces globes à encens dans les collections européennes est curieusement élevé. Cela tient sans doute à la grande faveur dont jouissaient en Occident les métaux islamiques à décor incrusté. Au début de la Renaissance, cette vogue culmine en Italie. On est allé jusqu’à supposer que des dinandiers orientaux s’étaient installés à Venise. Cette hypothèse n’est plus soutenue aujourd’hui. En revanche, il est indéniable que les Vénitiens se soient appliqués à reproduire les métaux orientaux De leur côté, les artisans du Proche-orient ont cherché à satisfaire la demande européenne en incluant dans leurs compositions des arabesques ajourées et de menus feuillages assez similaires à ceux que l’on relève sur les blasons italiens.
