Ce plat à panse convexe repose sur un pied annulaire. L’intérieur présente un décor peint de couleurs chatoyantes en bleu, vert, brun sur un fond blanc. Au centre, un navire à voiles à trois mâts évoquant un galion vogue sur l’eau dans laquelle trois petits poissons nagent dans le même sens. Le marli s’orne d’un décor dit « vagues et rochers », motif d’origine chinoise stylisé.
La céramique ottomane connut une formidable expansion avec les productions des ateliers de la ville d’Iznik, ancienne Nicée, devenue un important centre de production de céramique dont les ateliers furent actifs de la fin du XVe jusqu’à la première décennie du XVIIe siècle. La pâte blanche est très chargée en silice et en fritte plombeuse, comme l’engobe qui la recouvre et la glaçure posée sur le décor peint. Cette composition permet l’obtention de pièces dont la brillance fit la réputation de cette nouvelle production. Jusqu’en 1520 environ, la céramique d’Iznik se caractérisait par des motifs de couleur bleue réalisée à partir de poudre de cobalt sur fond blanc, bichromie directement inspirée de la porcelaine chinoise qui parvenait en Orient par la route de la soie. Par la suite, la gamme chromatique s’est enrichie de turquoise puis, vers 1540, de vert tilleul, mauve et gris. Enfin, à partir des années 1557-1560, le rouge s’est ajouté à cette palette.
Dès la fin du XVIe siècle et la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, le décor de navires constitue l’un des sujets les plus fréquents de la production d’Iznik et reflète l’importance de la marine tant européenne qu’ottomane en Méditerranée. Le galion est un navire à voiles du XVIe siècle, inventé par les Portugais. Les bateaux de différents types figurent sur divers supports − céramique, métaux, peinture − comme sur un pichet du musée du Louvre, un plat de Copenhague, une représentation du port de Lépante ou le fourreau d’un yatagan d’Alger. Plus tard, sous l’influence des importations chinoises des compagnies des Indes, le thème du bateau se retrouve sur les faïences de Delft (Hollande).
Le motif de voiliers est un thème méditerranéen apprécié dès l’Antiquité où différents types de bateaux figurent dans les mosaïques romaines africaines, telles les mosaïques de Sousse et de Dougga (Tunisie) et les mosaïques naviculaires d’Ostie (Italie). Ils figurent aussi sur des plats de la qasaba de Tunis, représentant des navires attribués vraisemblablement à l’époque hafside entre le XIVe et le XVe siècle, révélant probablement une influence aragonaise. D’autres productions andalouses datées des XIVe et XVe siècles présentent le même décor, ainsi que des carreaux de faïence mudéjar du XIVe siècle qui étaient fabriqués à Paterna dans la province de Valence.
