En 1983 fue declarada Monumento histórico y artístico, tres años más tarde se restauró la mezquita.
Esta mezquita transformada en iglesia se componía de tres naves perpendiculares al muro de la qibla, separadas por arcos moriscos agudos situados dentro de un marco rectangular y apoyados sobre pilares achaflanados de base cuadrada. Aún quedan restos de la decoración del mihrâb.
Hasta hace poco estaba considerada como una obra enteramente nazarí, pero según C. Barceló, basándose en las inscripciones del mihrâb, dataría de la primera mitad del siglo XIII. Otros autores como A. Fernández-Puertas dudan entre el final del período almohade y el comienzo de la época nazarí bajo el reinado de Mohamed I.
Si la mezquita es del primer período nazarí, entonces es contemporánea de otros monumentos de Granada como la gran mezquita del Albaicín, el minarete de San Juan, la ermita de San Sebastián de Granada o el de Ronda (Málaga).
En 1502, la mezquita fue transformada en ermita dedicada a Santiago y el mihrâb pasó a ser capilla. No obstante, aún se conserva gran parte de la decoración de la fachada, con paneles decorativos distribuidos según un esquema rectangular, herencia de la arquitectura nazarí.
